The Real McCoy is aged 5 years. It is a brand of rum with one of the few "honest" stories behind it. Indeed, it was the legendary rum runner Bill McCoy who coined the widely used phrase "The Real McCoy." Who smuggled rum into the United States during the era of prohibition. He never adulterated his product and as a consequence people started to call for "The True McCoy" as a symbol of a spirit of quality. A rum that is aged, but with no particular type or size of barrel. It will often carry an age statement, and often thought of as "sipping rums."
