Lovers of the American Mule Cocktail can thank Russia for it's origins.
The American Mule Started with the Moscow Mule
In 1941, Sophie Berezinski was a Russian immigrant who had relocated to Russia from the United States.
Sophie's father owned a copper factor where he manufactured copper mugs. Sophie traveled to the United States to try and sell the mugs, with little success, until she stumbled across two men that would help her to not only sell the copper mugs, but also propel her name into history.
John Martin, a businessman who had just purchased the Smirnoff Distillery (the distillery was failing badly), and Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock & Bull Hotel, located on the famous Sunset Strip, Jack was trying to sell his own brand of Ginger Beer.
Sophie, John & Jack sat for hours to come up with a drink that would combine all three - the copper mug, Smirnoff and Ginger Beer - and there we have the Moscow Mule.
Bartenders across the United States started substituting the Smirnoff Vodka for whiskey, and this is when the American Mule found its place in history.
These days, the drink is generally always referred to as the American Mule, even if using vodka. But it's true name is the Moscow Mule.
Try this easy yet refreshing cocktail on a summers day or by the fireplace. Either way, it never fails to satisfy.
